The Western Governors’ Species Conservation and Endangered Species Act Initiative of Wyoming Governor Matt Mead, launched in 2015, used workshops and webinars to develop an extensive first-year report with six central themes for further exploration and a multi-year work plan. The goal of the initiative to improve the efficacy of the Endangered Species Act is now being continued by the work of the WGA Working Lands Roundtable.

Wyoming Gov. Matt Mead kicked off the first workshop of the Species Conservation and Endangered Species Act Initiative with a nod to the significance of wildlife in the West and a request to find the best way to employ state expertise to conserve it responsibly. Workshop panels and roundtables covered innovative practices and the impact of conservation efforts on energy and mining, outdoor recreation, and agriculture.
This webinar examined current methods of funding species conservation efforts, as well as challenges and opportunities to leveraging additional funding for conservation of at-risk and endangered species. The Western Governors’ Species Conservation and Endangered Species Act Initiative was the central policy effort of Wyoming Governor Matt Mead as Chair of the Western Governors’ Association. The Initiative created a mechanism for states and stakeholders to share best practices in species management, promote the role of states in species conservation, and explore options for improving the efficiency of the Endangered Species Act.
