Western Governors express concern regarding the Environmental Protection Agency’s proposal to extend the current compliance dates for the New Source Performance Standards for new residential wood heaters, hydronic heaters and forced-air furnaces.
“The emissions from wood heaters represent a critical public health and environmental issue in the West. Since the 1980s, states have implemented regulatory and voluntary strategies to address these emissions,” states the letter signed by WGA Chair Hawaii Gov. David Ige and WGA Vice Chair North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum. “States are depending on the current compliance deadlines for these appliances to meet the responsibilities of their State Implementation Plans, as required by the Clean Air Act.”
The Jan. 24, 2019 letter to Acting Administrator Andrew Wheeler also encourages EPA to consult with state regulators regarding the current proposals. The Governors also reference previous outreach from the Western State Air Resources Council and WGA Policy Resolution 2018-05, Air Quality and Methane Emissions Regulation.
